USEFUL HOME TIPS FROM ENGR. YOUNG

Ever since the pandemic started, many have been obsessed with budol finds, house tours, and other conversations about homeownership. Slater Young, an engineer, turned celebrity, turned vlogger, has been gaining popularity especially appealing to homeowners and generally all others who dream of having their own Skypod someday. Their home in Cebu is indeed a head-turner and a home goal for many.

On his vlog, he shares some useful tips on constructing, designing, and maintaining your dream home. Here are some points:

Leave it to the experts

When building your dream home, it is important to get help from architects and engineers. As an engineer himself, he knows that an architect’s role is indispensable. While some may want to cut costs and find alternative ways, Slater says that having an architect that could help you carefully plan your dream home could actually save you money as it prevents last-minute costly changes that may come along the way.

Sign the tile you want

Slater has heard of some horror stories where homeowners are given a different tile from what they actually chose. Other suppliers argue that it was a different tile that the customer chose and they just delivered what was chosen. Therefore, to make sure you get the tile you want installed in your home, sign it yourself and have the vendor sign it as well.

He also added that it’s best to have 5% to 10% extra tiles bought as backup so you have the same exact tile should you need it in the future.

Be smart in choosing where to put your aircon

While it may feel refreshing to have your airconditioning unit directly above your bed, you might want to think twice as sometimes, there may be water droplets or leaks from it that may go directly to you or wake you up in the middle of the night. Plus, it may not be the best view you can have before going to sleep.

Invest in inverters

When you’re already in the appliances buying stage, make sure to invest early in high-quality and energy-saving pieces. Inverters may have a higher price tag on them upfront, but upon trying it out and comparing the inverter performance, Slater notes that it actually saves them around 30-40% energy in the long run.

Go solar

Slater had solar lights installed outside the Skypod. One that detects motion and one that is lit throughout the night. The best thing he notes about these solar lights is that they automatically light up, creating the impression that someone is always home.

Homeowners, are you up for the challenge of building your dream home? Best of luck!
