This whole pandemic has restricted movements of people across regions in the Philippines and across the globe. From the full and lively tourism in the country to a toned down level of inter- and intra-regional trips allowed, tourism initiatives are being put in place to slowly but surely ramp up tourism in the Philippines, starting with a “travel bubble” or “green corridor” that’s opening up for tourists.
The Green Corridor Initiative (GCI) is a project of the Department of Tourism (DOT) that clusters the provinces of Region 4A or Calabarzon, and reopen their famous destinations to local tourists.
“Through the GCI, the City of Antipolo and the Municipalities of Angono, Taytay, and Cainta are interlinked in the safety of a travel bubble, furthering the DOT’s commitment to promote the province as a fun, sustainable and safe destination,” said Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat (as cited in Rocamora, 2021).
How does it work?
Simply put, the Green Corridor are the places or provinces you are allowed to visit if you’re on the hunt for an escape from the city. These nearby travel destinations have their borders opened while still maintaining health and safety protocols. The DOT also pledged to strictly monitor the compliance of all accredited tourism establishments to ensure a successful reboot of the tourism sector.
The DOT has green-lighted the province of Rizal to be part of the corridor because it is blessed to have many open air, nature, culture-based tourism products that are sought after by many, especially during the pandemic.
“After being closed for several months in 2020, tourism in Rizal is slowly but surely picking up, bringing back jobs and the much-needed revenue to the province,” Puyat (as cited in Baclig, 2021) said.
Some fun and refreshing activities you can do in the Green Corridor are enjoying a spectacular view from Rizal’s Tanaw Park, dining and experiencing pottery at the Crescent Moon Cafe, appreciating and immersing in art at the Pinto Art Museum, and visiting a lot more restaurants and cafes for your cravings fix.
