PINOY BUILDING SUPERSTITIONS YOU MAY KNOW ABOUT

Though unscientific, most of us still adhere to the superstitions passed down from generation to generation. This is especially important when we are building our homes – from choosing a lot to counting the number of steps on the stairs.

Let’s look into some famous superstitions observed by many Filipinos. As the old adage goes, Wala namang mawawala kung maniniwala tayo.

On selecting the lot

You should go for square or rectangular lots as they are believed to maintain a balanced and harmonious home. Avoid triangular-shaped ones as their sharp corners are believed to attract accidents and conflicts.

There are also superstitions about not buying dead-end lots because it can cause misfortune or death in the family.

Foundation building

This one’s one of the most popular superstitions among Filipinos. It is believed to prevent bad spirits from wreaking havoc in the home if blood from a pig or chicken is smeared on the house’s foundation.

Coins are also buried on the ground with the foundation to ensure that the family continues to have wealth.

Positioning the main door

The main door should be oriented towards the rising sun as this is believed to bring warmth and prosperity to the home.

The kitchen should be in the East

As the position of the main door, the cooking area should also be in the East. Preparing food with enough daylight makes it easier, and it is believed to bring fortune and happiness to everyone who partakes of the meal.

Stairs should not be multiple of three

Another popular superstition is making sure that the last step of the stair tread is not “mata” or death. This follows the “oro, plata, mata,” translating to gold, silver, and death.

Additionally, the stairs should also turn to the right to signify righteousness. When it turns to the left, it can signify infidelity in marriage.

Which among these are you familiar with? Do you observe these superstitions when building your home?
