BUILDING ON A SLOPING SITE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

A sloping site is both a blessing and a curse. It can offer you scenic views and an interesting house, but it can also be very complex and costly. But, what is it really? As its name suggests, a sloping site means “that the land you are planning to build on is on an incline or decline (or even slope sideways) and isn’t flat like standard building sites” (“Building on a Sloping Block,” 2019).

Why choose a sloping site for your home

Scenic views. The elevation of your house means you can enjoy both the view of the skies above and the greens below. This is something that homes on the standard flat blocks cannot witness.

Landscaping and creative design. The striking aesthetics of inclined lots give owners a chance to create stunning exterior designs that can be multi-leveled. You can create a deck where you can enjoy your morning coffee with a panoramic view.

Natural Lighting. A sought-after feature in many homes is the natural light which brings about numerous health benefits such as better mood, better sleep, and higher productivity. Houses situated on an incline enjoy this privilege, and can perfectly maximize it through big windows.

How to build on sloped lots

The cut-and-fill method and making the use of stilts are the most common ways to build a house on a sloped lot.

Cut-and-fill “is a process of levelling out the land by cutting away some of the earth on the high side and moving it to the low side” (“Building on a Sloping Block,” 2019). This, then, makes construction of the house more time consuming and expensive.

Another method is to build on a series of supporting stilts or columns. Building on stilts is a more cost-effective choice because it leaves the ground relatively untouched, and it scraps out the need for expensive foundations.

While there are different resources on how to build on an incline, a thorough site analysis from the experts is vital to the process. Different sloped lands have different properties, and so, the cost and the design appropriate for each would be different.

Antipolo has a lot of properties situated on an incline. This is particularly special as it gives owners an awesome view of the city or the mountains.
