One thing that sets the Filipino apart is our being family-oriented. No matter how old we are and no matter where we are around the world, we tend to always go back home – a place where our hearts truly belong. This is the reason multigenerational households are common in the country.
In a study published in the Philippine Population Review in 2007 (as cited in Sky Villas, n.d.), it is said that 21.4% of Filipino families live in households that include children, their parents, and their grandparents.
Another study published in Viacom Global Insights’ 2017 Kid Power survey (as cited in Sky Villas, n.d.) “saw the number of Filipino kids living in these types of multigenerational households balloon to 41 percent—well above the global average of 13 percent.”
What is a multigenerational home? In its simplest sense, multigenerational households are characterized by “two or three generations coming together and living under the same or in the same property” (Nenadov, 2020).
As the Covid-19 pandemic continues, more and more families look for properties that can house their moms and dads. As we are all aware, facilities such as group setting and caretaking homes for aging people are at heightened alert during the outbreak. This translates to the desire to purchase multigenerational homes that would permit aging parents and relatives, as well as the younger generations to live together in one roof and spend more time together.
While there may be disadvantages of living in a multigenerational home like personality conflicts and limited space and privacy, Filipinos tend to lean more on its benefits. We’ve outlined some below.
Increased quality time
Oftentimes, families only get together on holidays because of the busy schedules. Especially when you have families of your own and you live in different places, it is easy to lose touch or skip family gatherings. One main advantage of living in the same roof is strengthening the relationship within your family. You get to share experiences, celebrate together, and bond through some household chores, homework, and family activities.
Shared financial expenses
Multigenerational living is a practical choice. It can cut costs significantly, given that there would be more people to pay for the mortgage, utility bills, maintenance fees, and other financial responsibilities in the family. By bringing the family together in one roof, you get to collectively allocate budget and save up more.
Ensure safety and security
Each member of the family benefits from the social relationship in multigenerational homes. This relationship limits depression and loneliness commonly experienced by the older generation as they have grandchildren in the house to brighten up the mood. In this way, the family gets secured that there would be an instant source of love and support in the family.
Also, since multiple generations are under one roof, the house rarely gets unoccupied for long so there would be someone present in the house for any unfortunate circumstances.
Provide children with role models
Studies have shown that “grandparents regularly have a profound influence on their grandchildren” (Brothers, 2019). Through multigenerational homes, children get a guarantee that someone would be there to help them, no matter the situation. Since there are also members of the family of all ages, this setup provides role models for not only kids, but adults too. While children look up to adults for help and advice, adults, too, can learn from children in the household.
In multigenerational living with members of different generations, each can benefit from the perspectives and experiences of one another.
Shared responsibilities
Aside from the financial aspect, multigenerational homes can share the responsibility of chores, babysitting, and other home responsibilities. Additionally, parents can also be assured that someone will be there to look after the children when they’re away.
With all these benefits, one thing is for sure – nothing beats the joy of spending time with the family. And what better way to do this? Spend quality time under one roof.
